Bike tour to Mt. Herbert
Christchurch, Sumner, Lytellton, ferry, Diamond Harbor, Port Levy, Mt. Herbert

We (Katrin, Malcolm, Aiko and me) want to meet us at six o'clock am. Actually we left Christchurch at 6:30 and it was still a little bit dark. We saw the sunrise on a big bridge on Moorhouse. It was quite impressive. After that we drove along the beach at Sumner. At the end of Sumner we had to cross the pass between which leads us to Lyttelton (about 200 meter high).

We arrived at Lyttelton at about 8 o'clock, from there leaves a ferry every twenty minutes. Two ways coast NZ$ 7.20. We were really lucky with the weather.

Diamond harbor is a small
village and it is really nice there. There are a few houses and the
sun is always shining (in any case when I have been there). From Diamond
Harbor we rode along the road towards Port Levy. At the beginning the
road goes along the beach, but soon you have to climb up a pass of 400
m. You can go directly from there to Mt. Herbert if you go along a path.
We couldn't do this because this area was closed due to tailing (all
the small lambs cut there tail, if you want further explanation, ask
Malcolm). |

From the top of the pass we had to ride down to Port Levy, that was a little bit disappointing because we knew that we had to ride back up to 900 m.

We did a small break and decided to go further up the road to Mt. Herbert. The gravel road wasn't too steep, and it took us only about 1 hour to get up to 800 m again. At the top where you have to turn from the gravel road to a walking track some were a little bit exhausted, other guys got stupid ideas.
