Visiting Grandpa in Ostfriesland
Seppel has never been there (well, he went there once 6 years ago for a weekend) so we thought it is about time to go to the area where Kerstin's mum is from.
A typical house in Ostfriesland build with red Backsteine, also called Klinker.
Klinkerstrasse, clinker street.

A windmill from back in the day. The main purpose of those mills were to grind wheat. In Netherlands they were used to pump water higher since some of the land is below sea level. Pretty neat structures. Wonder how much Megawatt they put out?
And the modern windmills. It is amazing how many of those things were build in the last 10 years. When we left Germany about 5 years ago there were hardly any, now they are all over the place, especially in the north of Germany. I think wind power produces already 15% of the needed power in Germany. A stan dart windmill produces up to 3 megawatt.
One of the older industrial branches of Ostfriesland, fishing.
One of the few National Parks in Germany, the Wattenmeer. I would have loved to jump into that stuff. Actually you can do hiking tours here, they take up to 4 hours and you end up on an island. Once the tide is back in you take a ferry back to the main land. It is pretty easy to get lost. You have to be careful that the tide doesn't move in too fast. When we were up there I read in the newspaper that people got rescued with a helicopter, I think a quite common thing. So if you go there you should take a guided tour.
Strandkoerbe, looks like it is busy here in the summer.
A nice fishing village.
Tea time in Germany, Kerstin's Grandparents and her aunts parents.
We spent a whole week up there, it was pretty nice to see the area. One day we will be back.
