Durango - Silverton, CO
Maybe as famous as Moab. Would it be as good as everybody says? Ned Overett (probably spelt wrong) and Tomac (also spelt wrong? it is a long time ago since I read those biking magazines) ride / train here. Well, I had half a day to check it out. Kerstin took a break since she was a bit tired. First I went into a bike store to get a map. As soon as I hit the trails I realized that I could have saved that money but it is a nice remembrance and I will put it up in my shop at my new place next to all that other stuff (crap, well, that's what kerstin says). Anyway, here are some pics.
Pretty amazing, can't get lost here. I hope bike trails and bike clubs are that amazing in Europe.
My bike is too heavy so the post fell over.
The hills of Durango
100 % single trail. I don't even remember when I was riding a gravel or access road the last time.
more single trail
Actually some of the stuff was pretty rocky and bumpy and it was HOT.
Downhill time ...
Back at the campground. A tourist train is running from Durango to Silverton. This train was used for the mining back in the day, now it is packed with people who pay 150 bucks for a return ticket.
We also went to Silverton but via car, a bit cheaper.
On top of a pass, the mountains are pretty high in Colorado.
10910 feet, roughly about 3300 m, there is no road in Europe or Canada which goes up that high. I think the highest pass in Europe is around 2800 m or so.
Silverton, it was 4th of July, Independence day, busy busy.
Nice colours. I should photoshop the power lines out.
Lots of mining was done in this area. The remains of it can still be seen.
Red Mountain. Lots of mining here.
The one million dollar highway. I guess it was so expensive to build that they couldn't effort barriers anymore. I am pretty sure if you drive off this road there is not much left. Big trucks went over this road, pretty scary actually.
More 4th of July festivities.
