Penobscot Narrows Bridge & Acadia National Park
The Acadia National Park was just around the corner. So, we decided to spend a day on the island to go for another swim in the Atlantic Ocean. On the way we drove by the Penobscot Narrows Bridge and decided to stop for some sightseeing
The old bridge and the new one next to each other. The old one is blocked off and not in use anymore. The new bridge was opened in December 2007.
One of the cast-in-place sections. Yes, no precast concrete. Sorry for the shoptalk.
Here is some information on the bridge segment construction.
And some information on the old bridge (Waldo Hancock Bridge) and why it had to be replaced.
A viewing platform was added to one tower. To incorporate this changes had to be done to the original design where the cables where in the center of the tower. Since an elevator was added the cables couldn't go through the center and had to be placed outside. This is probably the reason why it looks a bit funny.

We then drove to the Acadia Island to Bar Harbour. This city is full of tourists. We just tried to get out of there. But we saw that nice old sailing boat.
We decided to go for a swim once again. This is white beach in the Acadia NP.
And then it was time to look for a campground. We stopped at another lake we passed by.
We found a campground right at the ocean. The campground was
almost full although it had around 300 camping sites. Crazy!
I went down to the dock to take some pictures during sunset.
