city of fashion: Milano

21.9.03    Pavia and Milano by train

We went to Pavia and had a walk around. Pavia is a nice city, about 100.000 people live there. It is about 30 km's south of Milano. It is also famous for it typical kind of towers.

a famous bridge in Pavia

This towers are amazing, they are really high and thin. They have no use, they used to be status symbol. A few of them fall subsided and so a lot of them had to be demolished. Now there are only a few left in town but they are still enough that you can see them all over town. The holes are in for fixing framework during erection or renovation.

We left Pavia by train towards Milano. Trains are really cheap in Italy. Didier told me that we germans shouldn't complain about our train system, compared to the Italian one it is awesome. It is normal that the trains are late for about half an hour. If you plan a trip take that always in consideration. Milano has a couple of awesome buildings. The first amazing one is the train station with its huge hall. Another one is the cathedral.

From the center we went towards the castle.

It was really funny. When we stood around on the square I saw a girl with a New Zealand flag on her back pack. You don't see that everyday in europe. I showed Didier (my friend from New Zealand) her and we both shouted: "KIWI". First nothing happened but after we did it again she turned and we talked for a bit. At the end we walked around town the whole day together, so greetings to Heidi (you can see her on the picture below).
